Our Nature Mandalas are a tribute and honor to the simple beauty in Nature. A barnacle or limpet on a rock may not be aesthetically moving to most people. But in honoring those simple forms by making them the subject of a Mandala, the ordinary becomes something wondrous. The Mandala expands the subject’s essence. I think we can all relate to that – it’s a concept much like our everyday lives. One day and the next may seem ordinary, but combined together they make a beautiful, extraordinary life.
It’s interesting to me that in creating hundreds of Mandalas, I’ve found that some of the most beautiful ones begin with the most humble and simple of subjects. Rose hips, wild grasses, seaweed and barnacles are examples of that. I don’t feel that I’m attempting to make the subjects into something more glorious, as ordinary life has its own sacred beauty. By honoring these subjects in Mandalas, I’m both humbled and awestruck at the astounding, pure beauty of nature that we often overlook. Creating Mandalas allows my soul to connect to these things in a new way.
